INTERVIEW
1. What was your pathway to becoming a teacher?
"My journey to becoming a teacher was very unconventional. When I began college in 2002, my original goal was to be an immigration lawyer for Spanish speakers. Thus, I double majored in political science and Spanish. However, after going through ALL of the hoops to enter law school, I FINALLY took a law class during the final semester of my senior year and discovered that I in no way, shape, or form wanted to be a lawyer. It was way to isolating and I did not want to only do paperwork for the rest of my life. I had to decide pretty quick what I could do with my Spanish and Poli Sci degrees...I had always loved Spanish and my Spanish teachers, and I knew that I wanted to coach lacrosse. So, I decided to pursue my Masters in Education and the rest is history."
2. Is there anything you wish you would have done differently?
"I wish that I would have decided to become a teacher sooner..It would have save me time and money and I could have began my teaching career in 2006 instead of 2008."
3. What has changed since you became a teacher?
"Many, many things. My content constantly changed, as well as the laws and regulations that govern teachers. Teaching can be a thankless career, and politicians do not make it any easier. My curriculum itself underwent 3 changes in the nine years that I taught Spanish. Additionally, TECHNOLOGY. We are one-to-one now, and when I began in Hilliard in 2008, we were still using overhead projectors..."
4. What has been your favorite part about being a teacher?
"The students! If you become a teacher ONLY for the love of your content, then you are doing it wrong. I love Spanish and I love education, but at the end of the day, the reason that I truly LOVE my job and am happy to come here each day is because of my students."
5.What is your advise for me as I go on to become a teacher?
"Just know that change is part of being a teacher. Change can be hard, but it is inevitable. If you can adapt and flow in your situation, then life as an educator will be much easier. Also, NEVER be afraid to ask for help. Every teacher has been new and in that position; they know your pain! Ask for help when you need it :-) "
